Autonomous College is a self-governing, self-supporting, and federal standard and university-independent college.
Any government or university acknowledges it, but its academic courses follow its regulatory requirements pattern/grading system rather than the university syllabus. They have freedom in curriculum design, delivery, and assessment/evaluation.

Criteria of an Autonomous College
The University Grants Commission (UGC) gives autonomous college status to a college based on its performance across various criteria, including Faculty and student gratification, Research and Publications, Funding Community outreach, Economic development, Socialization, Institutional Development, and Capacity Development.
"Colleges (of any field), whether aided, partially aided, or unaided/self-financing, are eligible as long as they meet the requirements of Section 2(f) of the UGC Act."
1. A college must adhere to certain UGC-established requirements to get Autonomous college status.
2. Either NAAC must accredit the universities with an 'A' or the NBA must approve at least three courses with a minimum score of 675.
3. The institution must have existed for at least ten years and be accredited by the NAAC/NBA.
4. The institution must have satisfied the performance benchmarks established by the UGC for autonomous college status.
5. The college must be recognized with a score of 3.0 or above, up to 3.25, on a four-point scale of NAAC/corresponding NBA score/corresponding UGC accreditation score.
6. If the institution is governed by a Society/Aided College/Aided Institution, the institution must have filed the recommendation of the Committee of Sole Resident Director.
7. The institution must have a solid reputation for competence in teaching and research and for delivering high-quality education.
8. The institution should have a suitable infrastructure and teaching staff with demonstrated competence.
9. The institution should have a professional governing council and the power to operate on a solid financial foundation.
10. The institution must have a proven track record in the academic areas for which it seeks accreditation.
11. The school must fulfill the University Grants Commission's requirements for accreditation.
12. The institution must show the quality and relevance of its present facilities to the disciplines for which recognition is being sought.
13. The institution should publish its research outcomes in journals and other media regularly.
14. In addition, the college should have a solid infrastructure, qualified instructors, and enough facilities. The college may not be granted autonomy if these conditions are not met.

12. The ability to confer degrees through its degree-granting organizations.
13. The college's flexibility in setting its operational norms and regulations.
