Which Award Is Given For Excellence In Sports?
The National Sports Honors of India consists of six awards presented by the Central Government to Indian athletes. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports presents the yearly sports awards.
Typically, they are distributed on August 29 during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace by the President of India.
As of 2020, 1,259 individuals and organizations have received various National Sports Awards.
In addition to the six National Sports Awards listed below, the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award has also been presented since 2004. Here are India's six National Sports Awards:
Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna
The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, previously named the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, was established in 1991 and is the highest honor awarded to an Indian athlete.
It is awarded to the athlete with the "most exceptional performance" during the past four years. It includes a medallion, a certificate, and Rs 25 lakh cash.
Arjuna Award
The Government of India established the Arjuna Award in 1961 to recognize great success in national sports competitions.
The award consists of Rs 15 lakh in cash, a bronze statue of Arjuna, and an honor roll.
Dronacharya Award
The Government of India established the Dronacharya Award in 1985 to recognize excellence in sports coaching.
The award consists of Rs 15 lakh in cash, a bronze statue of Dronacharya, and an honor roll.
Major Dhyan Chand Award
The Dhyan Chand Award was established in 2002 and consisted of a statue of Dhyan Chand, a Rs 10 lakh cash reward, a certificate, and a ceremonial attire.
It is awarded to individuals who have made a "lifetime contribution to sports development" — athletes whose performances have benefited other athletes and sports and who continue to promote sports even after they retire from active competition.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy
In 1956-1957, the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy was established. This prize is for athletic achievements at the university level. It is awarded to a university for "outstanding performance in intercollegiate competitions" over the last year.
Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar
In 2009, the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar was established. This award is presented to individuals and private or public organizations for “having a prominent role in the promotion and growth of sports over the past three years.”
