Durand Cup Is Associated With Which Sports?
The Durand Football Tournament, sometimes known as the Durand Cup, is a domestic football competition conducted annually in India since 1888 in Annadale, Shimla. The Durand Football Tournament Society organizes it (DFTS).
This tournament is the third-oldest club football tournament in the world and the oldest in Asia. Since the beginning of the Federation Cup, which the Super Cup superseded, it has been an invitation-only exhibition competition. Still, since 2022 it has served as the season-opening for Indian football, with all of the top-tier and top five second-tier clubs required to compete.
The tournament is named for its originator, British India's foreign secretary, from 1884 to 1894, Sir Mortimer Durand. It began as a football tournament for various departments and regiments of the British Indian and Indian Armed forces.
Since independence, the presence of the Indian Armed Forces has been maintained by the involvement of multiple clubs of various regiments. In 2016, Army Green became the most recent Army squad to win the competition. FC Goa is the current holder of the Durand Cup.
In 1888, Sir Mortimer Durand founded the Durand football tournament, often known as the Durand Cup, in Shimla.
Sir Durand was recuperating at Shimla, India, in the north. Aware of the importance of sport to maintain health, he decided to award a reward for promoting sporting competitions throughout India. The location of the event was relocated to New Delhi in 1940.
