How High Is A Basketball Hoop?
Hoops for basketball are typically installed at a height of 10 feet (three meters) from the ground in indoor arenas, outdoor parks, and driveways all over the world.
There are some leagues for younger children that play the game with hoops that are lower to the ground, but from junior high schools up to the professional leagues, the game is played with hoops that are the standard height of 10 feet.
The explanation for this is surprisingly straightforward: when James Naismith invented the game of basketball in 1891, he hung the peach baskets that served as the first hoops on the handrail of the race course at the YMCA gym in Springfield, Massachusetts. The guard rail was 10 feet off the ground at that point.
One of the few aspects of the very first game of basketball that has survived to the present day is the impromptu decision that Naismith made to hang the baskets on the railing. The game was originally played with nine players on each team, as opposed to the modern minimum of five.
Back then, a soccer ball was used instead of a basketball because the basketball had not yet been invented. Dribbling the ball was strictly prohibited, and players were required to stand still whenever they had possession of the ball.
However, although the inconvenient peach baskets had been replaced with iron hoops, the height of the goal remained the same at ten feet above the ground. To retrieve the ball after a successful shot, players had to climb a ladder.
To make it more difficult to make a shot at higher levels of play as both the game and the players have progressed over the years, there have occasionally been calls to increase the height of the hoops at those higher levels of play.
In 1947, the average height of a player in the National Basketball Association (NBA) was just 6 feet 2 inches, while in 2015, that number was just under 6 feet 7 inches.
The high-flying, above-the-rim game that modern NBA fans can't get enough of was created as a result of this increase in height, along with improved training and an overall increase in athletic talent over the years.
Given the beautiful play that characterizes the modern game of basketball, it is highly unlikely that there will be any severe effort to change the height of the hoops, although the game is especially evident for today's players.
