Kiran Bedi is the first woman IPS officer in India. Kiran Bedi, an Indian politician, social activist, retired officer, and tennis player, was born into a Punjabi business family in Amritsar. From May 28, 2016, to February 16, 2021, she served as the twenty-fourth Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.
She entered the Indian Police Service in 1972 and served for 35 years until retiring voluntarily in 2007 as the Director-General of the Bureau of Police Research.

- Bedi, born into a Punjabi business family, was not raised religiously. However, she was raised in both the Hindu and Sikh faiths.
- She studied at Sacred Heart Convent, a Christian institution. Bedi participated in National Cadet Corps (NCC) and other extracurricular activities.
- Her school did not have a scientific track at the time, but it did offer a subject called "domestic" that prepared girls to be successful housewives. In ninth grade, Bedi enrolled in Cambridge College, a private institution that provided science and prepared her for the high school equivalency examination.
- Inspired by her father, Bedi began playing tennis at the tender age of nine.
- She frequented the Service Club in Amritsar and socialized with government employees. In 1975, her first assignment was in the Chanakyapuri sector of Delhi, resulting in her entering the public service.
- She began her career at Chanakyapuri, Delhi, as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
- She was awarded the President's Gold Medal in 1979, following which she relocated to West Delhi to combat crimes against women.
- Bedi oversaw the traffic arrangements for the Asian Games in Delhi in 1982 and the Commonwealth Heads of Government conference in Goa in 1983 as a traffic police officer.
- As Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kiran Bedi initiated an anti-drug campaign, which ultimately grew into the Navjyoti Delhi Police Foundation.
- In May 1993, after being appointed as the Inspector General of Delhi Jail, she instituted several improvements at Tihar Jail, for which she received international praise.
- In 2003, Kiran Bedi became the first Indian and first woman to be named Chief of the United Nations Police and Policy Advisor.

- In 2011, Bedi was among the most notable leaders of the India Anti-Corruption Movement. In January 2015, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
- On May 29, 2016, Kiran Bedi took the oath of office as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry and broke tradition by addressing the crowd at the path ceremony.
- She met her future husband, Brij Bedi, in Amritsar on the tennis courts. Brij, nine years older, played tennis at the university level. On March 9, 1972, they wed at the local Shivalaya temple.
Their daughter's name is Sukriti. The couple has spent most of their married life apart.
