Who Invented The Scooter?
From whence did electric scooters originate? "A decade ago, scooters and e-bikes did not even exist in our language," Sergio Avedian writes in an essay titled “Is the scooter era coming to an end?”
It is foolish to believe that scooters and micro-mobility, in general, have just recently emerged on the scene to clog city streets, spark "scooter wars," and collapse into a heap of broken rentals. In truth, powered bicycles and scooters have existed as least as long as the automobile.
The crude but functional wooden kick scooter with skate wheels dates back to the late 19th century when motorized bicycles were invented.
The Autoped, the first adult-sized motorized scooter, was created in 1913 and patented in 1916 by inventor Arthur Hugh Cecil Gibson (seen in cover photo).
The scooter, which was manufactured between 1915 and 1922, promised to revolutionize short trips, work commutes, and the lives of doctors, students, "grocers, druggists, and other merchants," "collectors; repairmen; messengers," and “anyone else who wants to save money, time, and energy while traveling.”
The gas-powered, two-wheeled, folding scooter was touted as the "motor vehicle of the millions" due to its 125-mile-per-gallon fuel economy and "low price that nearly anyone can buy." That was not entirely accurate. In the 1910s and 1920s, one hundred dollars went far further than today.
The Autoped was, however, well-designed. It purportedly featured 10-inch tires and a 155cc, 4-stroke, air-cooled engine on its front wheel that could generate speeds up to 35 mph.
The rider pulled the steering mechanism forward to engage the clutch and provide force to the speed-controlling lever on the handlebars. By pulling back on the steering column, the Autoped's brake was engaged.
Like the Unagi Model One, the Autoped's steering rod could be collapsed for storage. However, at over 100 pounds, the scooter was not exactly portable, nor was it very economical.
However, similar to the electric scooter, it exceeded original expectations and appealed to various consumers. Despite its reputation as a luxury toy, the Autoped was ridden by mail carriers, postal workers, and New York City traffic cops, as evidenced by images from the era.
The Autoped was introduced during a period of tremendous political reform and rising physical and metaphorical mobility for women.
The current electric scooter results from more than a century of research, development, and testing by innovators, engineers, and commuters
The Unagi E450 dual motor electric scooter is a lightweight aluminum and carbon fiber cruiser with a top speed of 15.5 mph, electronic brakes, and a peak instantaneous output of 900W.
Designed to be ridden, folded, and brought into your favorite sushi bar, it is a tribute to almost a century of technological and aesthetic advancements in scooter categorie
The entire Unagi team can't wait to add another chapter to the not-so-short history of the scooter, thanks to continuous research and development work.
