There are 28 police districts (four of which are Government Railway Police districts), each led by a Superintendent of Police. South Bengal Zone, Western Bengal Zone, North Bengal Zone, and an IGP Railways office comprise the three Zones.
About West Bengal Police
The West Bengal Police is one of the Indian states of West Bengal's two police forces. Another one is the Kolkata Police, which has jurisdiction throughout the city.
During the British Raj, the West Bengal Police was reformed following the requirements of the Police Act of 1861. It is led by a Director General of Police, who reports to the State Government via the Home (Police) Department.
Shri Manoj Malaviya, an IPS officer from the 1986 batch, has been the Director-General and Inspector General of the West Bengal Police from 28 December 2021.
Under the Police Act of 1850, the West Bengal Police has concurrent jurisdiction with the twenty-two revenue districts of the state, which constitutes one of the two general police districts of West Bengal.
The other general police district includes most of the Kolkata metropolitan region. It has a distinct police force (Kolkata Police Commissionerate) established and controlled by the Calcutta Police Act 1866 and the Calcutta (Suburban Police) Act 1866.
During the colonial era, when Calcutta served as the capital of British India, this system was conceived. The city police have remained separate from the state police.
