How Many Countries Play Cricket?
Test status can be bestowed by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Only after receiving permission from the International Cricket Council (ICC) can a nation or group compete in test cricket. The ICC now recognizes 12 sides eligible to compete in test cricket matches.
Australia
Australia was one of the first teams, along with England, to earn the right to compete in test matches. On March 15, 1877, they competed against England in their inaugural Test match, which took place in Melbourne. The final score was Australia triumphing by 45 runs.
England
On March 15, 1877, Melbourne, Australia, England, and Australia competed in the first Test match between the two countries. The English team is comprised of players from England as well as Wales.
South Africa

West Indies
On June 23, 1928, the West Indies played their first official test match against England at Lord's. At the time, the team consisted of players from 15 different Caribbean nations. The final score was an innings and 58 runs in England's favor.
New Zealand
On January 10, 1930, New Zealand competed in its first Test match, which took place in Christchurch. England won the match with a score of 8 wickets.
India
India received their Test status on June 25, 1932, when they competed against England at Lord's and lost by 158 runs. The match was played against England.
Pakistan
On October 16, 1952, Pakistan played its first test match against India in Delhi. India prevailed in the match by an innings and 70 runs, marking Pakistan's debut as a Test-playing nation.
Sri Lanka
On February 17, 1982, Sri Lanka was given the status of a Test team, becoming the eighth team. They were defeated by seven wickets in their maiden encounter, played against England in Colombo.
Zimbabwe
On October 18, 1992, Zimbabwe was welcomed into the elite group of nations that are allowed to compete in test matches. They played their very first test match against India in Harare, and the match ended in a draw. Due to the country's poor record, Zimbabwe voluntarily withdrew from Test status in 2006, although they were allowed to rejoin the club in August 2011.
Bangladesh
When Bangladesh took the field against India on November 10, 2000, in Dhaka, they became eligible to compete in Test matches. India triumphed in that match by a score of 9 wickets.
Ireland
Ireland On May 11, 2018, Ireland became a Test-playing team for the first time when they competed against Pakistan in Dublin. The match Pakistan won by five wickets was Ireland's debut as a Test-playing side. Ireland's players come from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Afghanistan
The International Cricket Council (ICC) granted Test status to Afghanistan on June 14, 2018, making them the most recent team to receive the honor. They have a match against India scheduled on that day in Bengaluru. India triumphed over their opponents by a margin of one inning and 262 runs.
To provide international teams that do not have Test status with the opportunity to compete in first-class cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) runs a competition called the Intercontinental Cup. Matches in this competition are played under similar conditions as those found in Test matches.
ODI Cricket
Some Associate Members have the potential to become One-Day International teams if they achieve a certain degree of success in the World Cricket League. This potential is not available to full members of the ICC, which are the 12 teams that compete in the Test format of the game.
The victory of the Netherlands national cricket team in the World Cricket League from 2015 to 2017 earned them the right to compete in the 2018 World Cup Qualifier as a fully qualified ODI squad.
Because they reached the semifinals of the league competition, three other clubs from the league also qualified for ODI status. That would be the United Arab Emirates, Scotland, and Nepal. While the United Arab Emirates and Scotland were both granted ODI status in June 2018, Nepal was not given full ODI status until January 2019.
Temporary ODI status
In addition to the full members, the period between 2005 and 2007 saw the addition of six additional teams that were given temporary ODI status and the name “Associate members.”
After another ten years, the number of Associate members was cut down to four after Ireland and Afghanistan were granted Test status and, as a result, full ODI status.
This change occurred after the Associate members had been given full ODI status. Before 2019, a total of just four teams were eligible to have provisional status; however, starting in 2019, this number has been extended to eight.
The ICC World Cup Qualifier is the event that marks the culmination of the ICC World Cricket League. Depending on how well a side did in the ICC World Cup Qualifier, a temporary ODI status might potentially be retained by that team for four years.
In June 2008, the United Kingdom of Scotland was designated as a temporary ODI, while the United Arab Emirates was awarded the status in February 2014. In August 2018, Nepal and the Netherlands became club members.
In April 2019, Namibia, Oman, Papua New Guinea, and the United States of America became club members. At this time, the following eight sides have been granted temporary ODI status, which will remain in effect until the qualifying round for the 2022 Cricket World Cup:
Scotland
During the One-Day International World Cup in England in May of 1999, Scotland played their first One-Day International match against Australia in Worcester. Australia won the match by a score of six wickets.
The UAE
In July 2004, the United Arab Emirates played its debut One-Day International match against Sri Lanka in Dambulla. The final score was 116 runs in favor of Sri Lanka.
Nepal
In August 2018, Nepal competed in its first One-Day International match against the Netherlands in Amstelveen. They were defeated in the game by a score of 55 runs.
The Netherlands
In February of 1996, during the ICC World Cup, the Netherlands played their first One-Day International match against New Zealand in Vadodara, located in India. The final score was 119 runs in favor of New Zealand's victory.
Namibia
In February of 2003, Namibia competed in their first-ever One-Day International match against Zimbabwe in Harare. They were defeated in the match by a score of 86 runs.
Oman
In April 2019, Oman competed in their first one-day international match against Namibia in Windhoek. The final score was 145 runs in Namibia's favor.
Papua New Guinea
In November 2014, Papua New Guinea competed in its first one-day international match against Hong Kong in Townsville. The match was won by PNG with a score of 4 wickets.
The United States
In September 2004, the United States of America competed in its first one-day international match at the Oval in England. Their opponent was New Zealand. They were defeated in the game by a score of 210 runs to none.
Twenty 20 Cricket
The International Cricket Council decided in April 2018 to provide T20I status to each of its 105 members, with the change taking effect on January 1, 2019.
To put it another way, all Twenty20 matches played after that date between ICC members would be considered international Twenty20 matches.
In the past, the International Criminal Court (ICC) counted Morocco, Cuba, Brunei, Tonga, and Switzerland among its members. However, the ICC has since terminated those countries' memberships for various reasons.
