How Is The Bronze Medal Decided In Olympic Badminton?
One of the most significant accomplishments that an athlete can achieve in their career is to win a medal in the Olympics and place himself on the podium.
For some, it was the beginning of a successful career, while for others, it was the crowning achievement of many years of toil and commitment.
The Olympic gold and silver medals are awarded to the athletes who place first and second in the finals of their respective events. The selection process for these medals is quite basic. Despite this, the process by which bronze medals are awarded might differ from sport to sport.
In most Olympic sports, races and finals are held to determine the Olympic podium, with the bronze medal going to the athlete who finishes in third place.
This technique is utilized in various sports, including athletics, swimming, cycling, gymnastics, canoe slalom, diving, equestrian, shooting, skateboarding, triathlon, and weightlifting.
Playoffs determine the bronze medal in sports played on courts and fields. The losers of the semi-final matches compete against each other to determine who will be the third-placed athlete or team. Take, for instance, the sports of football and hockey.
This bronze playoff is utilized in 3x3 basketball, archery, badminton, softball/baseball, fencing, football, handball, basketball, rugby, surfing, table tennis, beach volleyball, volleyball, and water polo. Other sports that utilize this playoff include surfing, table tennis, water polo, volleyball, and swimming.
At the Olympic Games, two bronze medals are awarded in each combat sport of boxing and wrestling, as well as the martial arts of judo, taekwondo, and karate.
In boxing, the athletes who place second and third in the semi-finals receive a bronze medal. Boxers used to compete in the ring for a bronze medal playoff until the Olympics were held in London in 1948.
However, beginning with the Olympics held in Helsinki in 1952, a new rule awarded bronze medals to both of the losing semi-finalists. The AIBA concluded that there was insufficient time for the losing semi-finalists to rest and prepare for the bronze medal playoff after their semi-final match.
Iterations of the repechage
The repechage system is used to award bronze medals in the sports of judo, taekwondo, and wrestling. In the repechage for taekwondo and wrestling, a separate draw is done. It comprises the semi-finalists who were eliminated in the previous round and the two athletes who were the eventual winners eliminated in the round of 16 and the quarter-finals.
The athletes who were eliminated in the round of 16 and the quarter-finals in the same half of the draw compete against each other, and the winners of those matches go on to take on the athletes who were eliminated in the semi-finals in their respective halves of the draw in a match for one of two bronze medals.
In the judo repechage, a separate draw is held for those competitors who were eliminated in the semi-finals and the quarter-finals, respectively.
The competition for the two bronze medals begins with the losing semi-finalists in each half of the draw facing off against each other. The victor of that matchup faces off against the other losing quarter-finalists in that half of the draw.
At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, there will be competitions in two different styles of karate: Kumite and kata. Medalists will be awarded in both of these categories.
In Kumite, competitors are eliminated from the competition in a single round, and those who finish in third place are awarded bronze medals.
Following the first round of eliminations in kata, the remaining six competitors will move on to the ranking phase, where they will be split into two groups. Each group's winners advance to the gold medal competition, while the other four compete against one another for the bronze medals.
The exceptions
In the golf competition, all 60 competitors in the men's and women's events play four rounds of golf, and the top three finishers in each event are awarded Olympic medals. A playoff system will be implemented if no competitor has a clear advantage over the others.
Sailing utilizes a somewhat unique method for its system. According to the regulations for sailing, each athlete must compete in 10 or 12 qualifying races (the number of races varies depending on the kind of boat), and only the top 10 finishers will advance to the medal race.
The final standings are determined by double the points obtained in the medal race and carrying over the qualifying scores of the top ten competitors into the medal race. The top three finishers in each event are awarded Olympic medals.
