NEET (UG) The National Eligibility Entrance Test (Undergraduate), previously known as the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT), is an all-India pre-medical entrance examination for students pursuing undergraduate medical (MBBS), dental (BDS), and AYUSH (BAMS, BUMS, BHMS, etc.) courses in government and private organizations in India, as well as those planning to pursue primary medical qualification abroad. NEET started in 2013.
National Testing Agency (NTA) administers the test. It delivers the results for seat distribution to the Directorate General of Health Services under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and State Counselling Authorities.
NEET-UG superseded the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) and several other pre-medical examinations administered by states and medical schools. However, due to litigation against the exam, it was impossible to administer it in 2014 and 2015.
NEET-UG is a single entrance exam for over 66,000 MBBS and BDS seats in India. NEET UG is the largest examination in India in terms of candidates registered.
NEET-UG became the only entrance test for admissions to medical institutions in India, comprising the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), which formerly administered separate tests.
History Of NEET
Before implementing NEET (UG) nationally, states administered their admission examinations, and major medical schools such as AIIMS, JIPMER, IMS-BHU, KMC Manipal & Mangalore, and CMC Vellore all administered their entrance exams.
NEET was first intended to be implemented beginning in 2012. However, the CBSE and Medical Council of India postponed NEET by one year for various reasons.
The exam was declared by the Government of India and was administered for the first time on May 5, 2013, for candidates seeking admission to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical programs.
On July 18, 2013, the Supreme Court decided in favor of 115 petitions, canceled the NEET test, and said that the MCI could not intervene with college admissions.
In response to the Medical Council of India's announcement that it would introduce the NEET-UG exam in 2012, several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, vehemently opposed the change, claiming that the syllabus proposed by the MCI and their state syllabi were vastly different.
Even though NEET 2016 is administered in English and Hindi, it has been revealed that students will be able to take the test in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Assamese, and Gujarati beginning in 2017.
Adding Kannada and Odia to the list allows students to take examinations in ten Indian languages, including English.
On July 18, 2013, the Supreme Court of India invalidated the National Eligibility Test (NEET) for admissions into all medical and dental institutes. The supreme court declared that the Medical Council of India could not administer a standardized test.
According to a statement by CBSE in 2013, CBSE intended to administer the AIPMT on May 4, 2014.
The final judgment on NEET UG was scheduled to be made following the judgment of India's Supreme Court.
The Central Board of Secondary Education releases the NEET-UG results and the All India Merit List. The Supreme Court of India, DGHS, MCI, and DCI guidelines compile the merit list and waitlist. The 2013 results were revealed on June 5.
In 2013, the Supreme Court of India pronounced NEET unlawful and unconstitutional. However, on April 11, 2016, it was reinstated when a five-judge Constitution bench revoked the earlier ruling and permitted the Central Government and the Medical Council of India (MCI) to operate the common admission test until the court rules again on its legality.
